What the extra money buys
Two-way tests and over 30 service resets
Is the Innova 5610 worth it?
Only if you'll use its two-way tests and service resets. The Innova 5610 ($349.99) can tell parts like the fuel pump to switch on, and Innova lists over 30 service resets, such as bleeding ABS brakes. Updates are free, with no subscription. If you just need to read engine, ABS and airbag codes, our pick, the BlueDriver Pro (Next-Gen), does that for $94.94.*1–4
Who it's for, and who should get something else
Get it if you do your own brake, battery and sensor work and want the tool to run the steps: ABS bleeding, parking-brake service for pad changes, steering-angle reset, battery reset after a swap.*3, 5
Get the BlueDriver Pro ($94.94) if you mainly want to know why a light is on. Its maker lists ABS and airbag reading on 11 of the 12 makes we checked, with no fees.*2
Get the Innova 5210 ($89.99) if engine and ABS codes plus a battery test are enough. It doesn't read airbag codes.*4, 6, 7
Diesel pickup? For DPF regeneration, our diesel pick is the XTOOL Anyscan A30M ($135.12). The 5610 is the one to get if you need an AdBlue (DEF) reset.*5, 8

Two-way tests mean the tool sends a command and you watch what happens: run the fuel pump, fire an injector, cycle an ABS pump. Innova says the 5610 does this, and that the tests you get depend on the car.*3, 5 It also graphs, records and plays back live data, and tests the battery and alternator.*3, 5
What Innova itself warns about
- Not every test works on every car. Innova's chart says some buyers assumed it could run "100% of all bidirectional features on 100% of vehicles," and that it doesn't. Innova's Coverage Checker lists what works on a given car, so check yours before you buy.*6
- Model years differ by page. Innova's coverage page says 1996 to 2022, with 2023 "in progress." The Amazon listing says "most 1996 - 2023 (2024 coming soon) OBD2 vehicles."*1, 10 On a 2023 or newer car, check Innova's Coverage Checker first.
- US and Canada only. It won't work on cars sold elsewhere.*5
- The car has to crank. It can't read a car that won't start or crank. It also can't program key fobs or reprogram a car's computer.*5
What owners report
The most common praise and complaints from owner reviews on Amazon, retailer sites, forums and Reddit. Sources are listed at the end.
Innova 5610
- Owners say it reads ABS, airbag and transmission codes, and like that there is no subscription. A former master tech says that for a non-professional, "it is hard to beat."*19–21
- Some two-way tests and resets don't work on every car. A Subaru owner found most Subaru functions weren't supported.*19, 22
- One long-time tech calls it slow, with a clunky menu.*23
2018 and newer Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram
Plan on reading codes only. On these cars, Innova's 5610 page says the handheld can't erase codes, reset the oil light or initialize a new battery. It can still read codes, show live data and relearn tire sensors.*5
Why: these cars have a "secure gateway" that blocks clearing codes and running tests until the tool logs in through AutoAuth, a paid service. AutoAuth lists plans from $5 a month, billed yearly.*11, 12 A help-center article says the newest version, the "5610v3," can log in, but Amazon doesn't say which version it ships.*11 If you work on a 2018 or newer Ram or Jeep, the XTOOL Anyscan A30M's Amazon listing names AutoAuth access for these brands.*8
What it costs after you buy
- No subscription. Innova says "Updates are free. And there are no subscriptions."*5
- The phone app is optional and free. The handheld works with no phone and no internet. The app adds suggested fixes and maintenance tips.*5, 13, 14
- Updates need a computer. You plug the tool into a Windows or Mac computer to update it.*15
- Warranty: 1 year, for the first owner only. You ship it to Innova for repair or replacement.*16
- A cheaper version. On its own site, Innova also sells "2023 model" 5610 units for $279, and says they may have light scratches.*9
Diesel jobs: DPF and AdBlue
Innova lists DPF reset, NOx sensor reset and AdBlue (DEF) reset for the 5610. Of the 24 scanners we checked, it's the only one whose maker lists an AdBlue reset.*5 The manual adds a limit: if your truck doesn't support a DPF regeneration from the tool, the 5610 only shows steps for a passive regen, done by driving.*3 For forced DPF regeneration at a lower price, see our diesel truck guide.

| XTOOL Anyscan A30M Our diesel pick | $135.12 | Phone app + plug-in | You want DPF regeneration and two-way tests for less, on a phone app, or you work on 2018+ Chrysler brands. |
