What's the best OBD2 scanner for a diesel truck?

Get the XTOOL Anyscan A30M ($135.12). It's the cheapest scanner whose maker lists DPF regeneration, and XTOOL says updates are free for life. If you need an AdBlue (DEF) reset, get the Innova 5610 ($349.99), the only one whose maker lists it.*1–3 Other guides often name the LAUNCH CRP129HD and ANCEL HD601. See how they compare.

Both are built for semis and other heavy trucks, not pickups. Functions are what each maker's own page or manual lists.

LAUNCH CRP129HD and ANCEL HD601 compared with our picks
ScannerPriceTypeOur take
LAUNCH CRP129HD
For semis and fleets
$499.00Handheld, heavy-dutyLAUNCH calls it a tool "for Heavy-Duty Vehicles" and lists DPF Regen, Injector Coding and "Urea Drive (DEF)." Only the Amazon listing names pickups. Get it for a semi or a big work truck. For a pickup, the A30M lists DPF regeneration for $363.88 less.*4
ANCEL HD601
Code reader for semis
$144.99Handheld, heavy-dutyANCEL calls it "a handheld code reader for commercial vehicles." Its manual says it can't run a forced regeneration: it "only supports basic diagnostic functions such as read/clear codes." For a pickup, the A30M costs $9.87 less and lists DPF regeneration.*5

Diesel cars and trucks sold in the US have had OBD-II since the 1997 model year, a year after gas.*6 So a basic reader can show a diesel's check engine codes; ANCEL, for one, says its $29.99 AD310 supports 12-volt diesels.*7

What a basic reader can't do is the diesel service work: start a DPF (diesel particulate filter) regeneration, or reset the AdBlue (DEF) system. For that you need a scanner whose maker lists those jobs. We read the claims for 24 everyday scanners. Only 3 list a DPF function on the maker's own page, and only one lists an AdBlue reset. The bigger tools in the table above list more, for three to four times the price of the A30M.

Which scanners list diesel jobs?

Only what each maker or listing says. A dash means it doesn't say. Our pick rule: the cheapest scanner whose maker's own page lists a DPF function, and whose maker promises free lifetime updates.

Our pick for most diesel trucks

XTOOL Anyscan A30M

XTOOL's photo listing the A30M's special functions.
XTOOL's photo listing the A30M's special functions. Image: XTOOL, via Amazon.

Who it's for. Diesel pickup owners who want to run a DPF regeneration and other service jobs from a phone, with free lifetime updates.

Why we picked it. XTOOL's spec table lists "DPF Regeneration Y," along with "Action Test Y" (active tests), oil reset, battery, parking brake and steering angle. It says "Free Upgrade Years Lifetime Free" and gives a 2-year warranty, the longest of our picks. It costs $193.88 less than TOPDON's ArtiDiag900 Lite, the other scanner whose maker lists a DPF job and free lifetime updates.*1, 3, 8

Flaws but not dealbreakers. It runs on a phone app for iPhone or Android. XTOOL lists no AdBlue reset. Its coverage line is "Compatible with Global Vehicles," with no make list, so check your truck with XTOOL first. On a 2018 or newer Ram, see the gateway note below.*1

What owners report.

  • Owners say it is a cheap way to get two-way tests and service jobs like ABS brake bleeding, with lifetime updates and no yearly fee.*18–20
  • The app is the weak spot. Owners call it slow, and several Amazon reviewers say it fails to clear codes.*18, 21, 22
  • One owner says it works better on a tablet than a phone.*19

Our pick if you need an AdBlue reset

Innova 5610

Innova's photo of the 5610 in hand.
Innova's photo of the 5610 in hand. Image: Innova, via Amazon.

Who it's for. Owners of diesels with an AdBlue (DEF) system who want a handheld that can reset it.

Why we picked it. Innova's page lists DPF Reset, NOx Sensor Reset and Adblue Reset among its "Advanced Resets," plus bidirectional tests. It is the only scanner we checked whose maker lists an AdBlue reset.*2, 9

Flaws but not dealbreakers. It costs $214.87 more than the XTOOL. Its Amazon listing says it covers "most 1996 - 2023 (2024 coming soon) OBD2 vehicles." Innova's page says "Updates are free. And there are no subscriptions." Innova's own chart page says some users assumed it "could do 100% of all bidirectional features on 100% of vehicles on the road," and the listing says "Compatible with select vehicle makes and models; not universal."*9

What owners report.

  • Owners say it reads ABS, airbag and transmission codes, and like that there is no subscription. A former master tech says that for a non-professional, "it is hard to beat."*23–25
  • Some two-way tests and resets don't work on every car. A Subaru owner found most Subaru functions weren't supported.*23, 26
  • One long-time tech calls it slow, with a clunky menu.*27

Will these work on a semi or a heavy-duty truck?

Not on what their makers say. None of the 24 everyday scanners we checked claims J1939, the protocol commercial trucks use. For a semi, look at a heavy-duty tool like the LAUNCH CRP129HD or the ANCEL HD601, above. Veepeak says "Commercial vehicles using J1939 protocols are not supported." TOPDON's ArtiDiag600 S listing says it works on "12V light-duty vehicles from 1996 onward."*10, 13

For a pickup like an F-250 or Ram 2500, check the scanner maker's lookup tool for your exact truck and year. BlueDriver's Amazon listing names those trucks, but BlueDriver's own page says "Works with All Gas Vehicles 1996+."*15

The catch on a 2018 or newer Ram

Since 2018, FCA brands (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram) have a security gateway that blocks unregistered tools. Without registering, "users cannot directly clear DTCs or perform bi-directional control tests," XTOOL says.*16 Registration is with AutoAuth, from $5 a month, billed yearly.*17

The A30M's Amazon listing promises "FCA AutoAuth access for Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Fiat (2018+)." XTOOL's spec table lists "Supported Protocols CAN FD/FCA." But XTOOL's own post on the gateway doesn't name the A30M in its list of tools, so confirm with XTOOL before you count on it for a Ram.*1

How to check a scanner for your diesel

  1. Find "DPF" or "AdBlue" on the maker's own page, not just the Amazon listing. 2 of the 5 scanners that list DPF say so only on Amazon.
  2. Run your truck's year and engine through the maker's lookup tool. Service functions vary by vehicle.
  3. On a 2018 or newer Ram, check that the maker, not just the seller, says the tool works with AutoAuth.

Questions people ask

Will an OBD2 scanner work on a diesel truck?
For check engine codes, yes: diesels have had OBD-II since 1997. For diesel jobs like a DPF regen, you need a scanner whose maker lists them, such as the XTOOL A30M ($135.12).
Can an OBD2 scanner do a forced DPF regen?
Some say so. XTOOL lists DPF regeneration for the A30M. TOPDON and Innova list a "DPF reset" for the ArtiDiag900 Lite and the 5610, and their pages don't say more. Check your truck in the maker's lookup tool, because functions vary by vehicle.
Which scanner resets AdBlue (DEF)?
Of the 24 everyday scanners we checked, only the Innova 5610 ($349.99) lists an AdBlue reset on its maker's page. For heavy trucks, LAUNCH lists a "Urea Drive (DEF)" function on the CRP129HD ($499.00) but doesn't say what it does.
Does BlueDriver work on diesel trucks?
BlueDriver's pages say it three ways: "most gas, diesel, and hybrid vehicles," "Works with All Gas Vehicles 1996+," and, on Amazon, "select light-duty trucks and diesels." It lists no diesel service jobs.
What is the best OBD2 scanner for a Ram, Duramax or Powerstroke?
We didn't find a maker page that lists diesel jobs by engine. Start with the XTOOL A30M and check your truck in XTOOL's tool. On a 2018 or newer Ram, you'll also need AutoAuth to clear codes.
