What size jump starter do I need?
For most cars and SUVs, with a 4-cylinder or V6 engine, get the NOCO Boost Plus GB40. For a V8 truck or SUV, get the bigger Boost HD GB70. Size a jump starter by your engine, not by the amps on the box.*11, 12

The one thing to get right is size, and the big number on the box, peak amps, is the wrong guide. We read the claims for 28 jump starters on Amazon and on their makers' websites, matched each maker's engine rating to real engines, and picked by a written rule: the maker must state both an engine rating and a battery size, and among those we chose what Amazon shoppers buy most. Every rating here is the maker's own, and we show where each one comes from.
Which size fits your car?
Each pick is the cheapest of our four NOCO picks (GB40, GB70, GB150 and GBX155) that NOCO rates for your engine size plus about 2 L, so it still starts on freezing mornings. For a 6.7 L diesel, none has that room, so you get the cheapest that covers the engine. Not sure which engine you have? Use your VIN below.

For a 4-cylinder, up to 2.5 L
NOCO GB40
NOCO rates it for 6 L gas and 3 L diesel. That covers a 2.5 L gas engine with the extra 2 L we suggest for freezing mornings.*12

For a diesel truck, 6.6 to 6.7 L
NOCO GB150
NOCO rates it for 9 L gas and 7 L diesel. That covers a 6.7 L diesel. No NOCO model has the extra 2 L we suggest for freezing weather; the GBX155 ($369.95, 8 L diesel) comes closest.*13

An engine rating that covers your engine. Makers state the biggest engine a pack can start, like "up to 6.0 L gas, 3.0 L diesel." Match that to your engine, with some room to spare for cold mornings. Ignore peak amps: packs with the same amps promise very different engines, as the chart below shows.
Clamps you can't hook up wrong. Look for spark-proof clamps and reverse-polarity protection, which keeps the pack off if the clamps are backward. All three of our picks have both, plus a red warning light.*11–13
A way to start a completely flat battery. Some packs won't switch on if the car battery is below about 2 volts. NOCO's packs have a manual override button for that.*33
A size you'll actually keep in the car. Our picks run from 2.45 lb (glovebox size) to 6.39 lb.*13, 34 The flashlight and USB phone charging are handy extras, not reasons to pick one pack over another.
Our pick for most cars
NOCO Boost Plus GB40

Who it's for. Anyone with a 4-cylinder or V6 car, SUV or minivan, up to about 4 liters.
Why we picked it. NOCO rates it for gas engines up to 6 L and diesels up to 3 L; its Amazon listing claims up to 20 starts on a charge. At 2.45 lb it fits in a glovebox.*34 It recharges over USB-C in about 3 hours and doubles as a phone charger and flashlight. It is also the jump starter Amazon shoppers buy most: 20,000 last month.*12, 32
Flaws but not dealbreakers. The warranty is 1 year.*41 NOCO says to recharge it every 4 to 6 months and to charge it only between 32 and 104°F, so bring it inside to charge in winter.*39, 40 The 100-lumen flashlight is dim next to the GB70's 400.
What owners report.
- Owners say it starts cars and small trucks right away, and several have jumped dozens of vehicles with it.*49–51
- Many say it holds its charge for a long time between uses.*49, 52
- It can struggle with a V8 or a battery that is fully drained. A Ram forum owner says "It struggles to turn over a V8."*49, 53
- Some Amazon reviewers say their unit stopped recharging or died within a year.*49
Budget pick
GOOLOO A3

Who it's for. Drivers who want the lowest price, or a tire pump built in. Like the GB40, it suits 4-cylinder and V6 cars.
Why we picked it. GOOLOO rates it for 9 L gas and 6.5 L diesel, and its manual lists a 44.4 Wh battery. It adds an air pump rated to 150 PSI. At $69.96 it costs $29.99 less than the GB40, and Amazon shoppers bought 10,000 last month.*6, 32, 46
Flaws but not dealbreakers. GOOLOO rates it for a bigger engine (9 L) than NOCO rates the GB70 (8 L), from a smaller battery (44.4 vs 56 Wh). The makers rate differently, so don't count on the extra size. The warranty is 18 months in the manual. GOOLOO's store policy says "18+6+6" months, and its product pages say up to 30; the first extra 6 months needs you to register and sign up for its newsletter.*42–45 GOOLOO says to recharge it every 3 months.*48
What owners report.
Our pick for V8 trucks and SUVs
NOCO Boost HD GB70

Who it's for. V8 trucks and SUVs, like the F-150 5.0, Chevy 5.3 and Ram 5.7. It also suits small diesels up to 3 liters, since NOCO rates it for 6 L diesel.
Why we picked it. NOCO rates it for 8 L gas and 6 L diesel; its Amazon listing claims up to 40 starts on a charge. Its 56 Wh battery is more than twice the GB40's 24 Wh, and its flashlight is 400 lumens. On Amazon it costs $139.99, well under the $199.95 NOCO charges on its own site.*11, 32
Flaws but not dealbreakers. NOCO's spec page lists it at 4.18 lb and its user guide says 5 lb, either way well over the GB40, so it lives under a seat more than in a glovebox.*35, 36 NOCO's support page puts a USB recharge at about 4.5 hours; the Amazon listing says 6.*11, 37 The warranty is 1 year.
What owners report.
- Owners say it starts V8s and diesel trucks, including in the cold. One Reddit owner says it started his 6.0 Powerstroke "more than a few times in the cold."*53, 57, 58
- Several say it keeps most of its charge for months. A Ram forum owner says it "holds down to ~75% after a year."*59, 60
- Some owners say it wouldn't start a dead battery, or failed within months. One forum owner says it may not jump a car once its own charge drops below about 75%.*57, 61
- Some Amazon reviewers call it overpriced.*57
Our pick for diesel trucks
NOCO Boost Pro GB150

Who it's for. Heavy-duty diesel pickups: the Powerstroke 6.7, Duramax 6.6 and Cummins 6.7.
Why we picked it. NOCO rates it for 9 L gas and 7 L diesel, enough for a 6.7 L diesel, from an 88 Wh battery. Its Amazon listing claims up to 80 starts on a charge. Its flashlight is 500 lumens.*13
Flaws but not dealbreakers. It weighs 6.39 lb on NOCO's spec page (the Amazon listing says 7.5 lb) and takes about 7 hours to recharge. It doesn't leave the extra 2 L we suggest for freezing weather on a 6.7 L diesel; no NOCO model does. The closest is the NOCO Boost X GBX155 ($369.95, 8 L diesel).*15
What owners report.
- Owners say it starts big diesels, such as a 6.7 Cummins, and keeps working for years. One has used it for five years in Minnesota, down to -40°F.*62–64
- Owners like the heavy-duty cables.*62
- Some say it stopped charging past halfway or quit after a year or two. A Ford Super Duty forum owner says its battery "refused to charge after a couple of years."*62, 65
- On a very low battery it may need the manual override. One forum owner says he has to "bypass the safety often."*61
How to jump-start a car with a jump starter
NOCO's instructions come down to four steps: attach the clamps, power on, start the car, power off.*33
- Attach the clamps. Red to the battery's positive (+) post, black to the negative (−) post or a bare metal bolt.
- Turn the pack on. A solid red light means the clamps are backward: swap them. If nothing lights up, the battery may be below 2 volts; hold the manual override button for 3 seconds.*33
- Start the car.
- Turn the pack off and remove the clamps. Recharge it when you get home.
Why you can't trust the amps on the box
7 jump starters claim the same 4,000 A but promise engines from 8 to 12 L. Peak amps are a split-second burst with no standard test, so brands can't be compared on them, and 3 Amazon listings even contradict their own maker's site.*30

Will it work in the cold?
Size up if you park outside where winters drop below freezing. Every rating here comes from the maker, and none says what temperature it was measured at.
Only 10 of the 28 jump starters we read list an operating range. 9 of those say they work down to -4°F; 1 stops at 14°F. NOCO's spec pages list none, but its manual gives -4 to 122°F for use and 32 to 104°F for charging.*38, 39 Jump starters certified to the UL 2743 safety standard must print their operating range on the label, so check the label before winter.*29
What's the difference between peak amps and cranking amps?
Cranking amps measure current held for several seconds at a set cold temperature, which is closer to a real start than a peak-amp burst.*30
Only one of the 28 jump starters we read lists cranking amps: the lead-acid Clore JNC660, at 425 cranking amps next to 1,700 peak amps.*3 The UL 2743 standard covers safety, not starting power, so a UL mark doesn't rate amps either.*29
The competition: every jump starter we checked
Why not the AstroAI S8 ($42.19)? AstroAI rates it for 6 L too, but its Amazon title says 3,000 A while its own spec table says 1,500 A.*1
Why not a cheap 6,000-amp pack? Sharmeal's 7,000 A pack ($39.99) and an unbranded 6,000 A pack ($39.88) state their ratings only on Amazon. OXILAM's 6,000 A pack ($59.98) lists its rating on its own site but gives no battery size.*20, 23, 25
Sorted by how many Amazon shoppers bought it last month. "Maker site": the maker's own page states the rating. "Amazon only": only the seller's listing does, and nobody we found checks it. "Disagree": the two give different numbers.

How to check a jump starter before you buy
- Find the engine rating for your fuel. Look for "up to X L gas, Y L diesel." Ignore the peak amps.
- Check that rating on the maker's own site. If only the Amazon listing states it, or the two disagree, treat it as unverified.
- Look for the operating temperature range if you park outside in winter. No range listed means no promise for cold mornings.
Questions people ask
- Is 1,000 amps enough to jump a car?
- For most 4-cylinder and many V6 cars, yes, if the maker rates it for your engine. NOCO's 1,000 A GB40 is rated for 6 L gas. But amps alone don't tell you: AstroAI rates its 1,500 A S8 for the same 6 L. Check the engine rating.
- What size jump starter do I need for a V8 truck?
- At least your engine size: 5.7 L covers the common 5.0 to 5.7 L V8s. With the extra 2 L for freezing weather, look for 8 L, such as the NOCO GB70 ($139.99).
- What size jump starter for a diesel?
- Use the diesel rating, not the gas one. It's lower than the gas rating for 21 of the 24 jump starters we read that give both. A 6.7 L diesel truck needs at least a 6.7 L diesel rating: in NOCO's line, the GB150 (7 L diesel) and GBX155 (8 L diesel). Neither has the extra 2 L we suggest for freezing weather, so we pick the GB150, the cheaper one that covers the engine; the GBX155 has the most room.
- Are peak amps the same as cranking amps?
- No. Peak amps are a brief burst, and no standard test exists for them, so brands can't be compared on it. Cranking amps measure current held for seconds at a set cold temperature. Of 28 jump starters we read, only one (Clore) lists cranking amps.

Notes and sources
- We read the claims on each maker's product page and Amazon listing on October 24, 2026, and saved the exact wording. Where the two disagree, we say so.
- "Box says" is the peak amp figure the maker or seller advertises. "Engine rating" is the largest engine the maker says the pack starts.
- Size rule: a maker rating at least as big as your engine, for your fuel. The extra 2 L for freezing weather is our own margin, not a maker's or a standard's.
