- It covers your engine with room to spare. NOCO rates it for gas engines up to 6 L. Most 4-cylinders and V6s are 4 L or less, so you keep the extra 2 L we suggest for freezing mornings. A bigger V6, like GM's 4.3 L, gets the GB70.*1
- It's smaller and lighter. 2.45 lb against 4.18 lb on NOCO's spec pages (NOCO's GB70 guide says 5 lb), so it fits in a glovebox, where it's easy to grab.*4–6
- It costs $40.04 less on Amazon today.*3
What owners report
The most common praise and complaints from owner reviews on Amazon, retailer sites, forums and Reddit. Sources are listed at the end.
NOCO Boost Plus GB40
- Owners say it starts cars and small trucks right away, and several have jumped dozens of vehicles with it.*12–14
- Many say it holds its charge for a long time between uses.*12, 15
- It can struggle with a V8 or a battery that is fully drained. A Ram forum owner says "It struggles to turn over a V8."*12, 16
- Some Amazon reviewers say their unit stopped recharging or died within a year.*12
NOCO Boost HD GB70
- Owners say it starts V8s and diesel trucks, including in the cold. One Reddit owner says it started his 6.0 Powerstroke "more than a few times in the cold."*16–18
- Several say it keeps most of its charge for months. A Ram forum owner says it "holds down to ~75% after a year."*19, 20
- Some owners say it wouldn't start a dead battery, or failed within months. One forum owner says it may not jump a car once its own charge drops below about 75%.*17, 21
- Some Amazon reviewers call it overpriced.*17
When to get the GB70 instead
You drive a V8. A 5.0 to 5.7 L V8 plus our 2 L cold margin needs about 7.7 L. The GB70 is rated for 8 L; the GB40's 6 L covers the engine only on mild days.*2
You drive a diesel. The GB40 is rated for diesels up to 3 L, with nothing to spare on a 3 L diesel. The GB70 is rated for 6 L. For a 6.7 L heavy-duty diesel, see our diesel truck pick.
You want more starts between charges. NOCO's Amazon listings say up to 40 starts per charge for the GB70 against 20 for the GB40, from a 56 Wh battery against 24 Wh.
You'll use the flashlight. The GB70's is 400 lumens; the GB40's is 100.
One price note: Amazon has the GB70 at $139.99, while NOCO's own site lists it at $199.95.*2, 3
Why some people pick the GBX45 instead
NOCO's GBX45 ($124.95) sits between the two: rated for 6.5 L gas and 4 L diesel. It recharges in about 48 minutes over USB-C and can charge a laptop at 60 watts.*7
The trade-off: its Amazon listing says up to 6 jump starts per charge, against 20 for the GB40. If you mainly want a jump starter that's ready after months in the glovebox, the GB40 is the safer pick. If you'd also use it as a fast laptop charger, the GBX45 makes sense.

Questions people ask
- Is the NOCO GB40 enough for a V8?
- It is rated for gas engines up to 6 L, which covers a 5.0 to 5.7 L V8 on paper. It leaves no room for cold mornings, so for a V8 we pick the GB70.
- Can the GB40 jump a diesel?
- NOCO rates it for diesels up to 3 L, with no room to spare on a 3 L diesel. For a diesel up to about 4 L we pick the GB70 (6 L diesel). A 6.6 or 6.7 L truck diesel needs the GB150 or bigger.
- How many jump starts do you get per charge?
- NOCO's Amazon listings say up to 20 for the GB40 and 40 for the GB70.
- Is the GB70 worth the extra money?
- Only if you need its bigger rating (a V8, a big V6 or a small diesel) or the extra starts. For a 4-cylinder or V6, the GB40 does the job for $40.04 less.
